High jumper Oni ready for best of British challenge

Ranked the number one high jumper in Britain this year, the 28-year old Belgrave Harrier pitches up in Birmingham with a point to prove.

 

It’s been a long-time since a field event was as competitive as the men’s high jump at the national championships.

And no other event at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium will feature three Olympic finalists.

But Oni – who still needs to find a two centimetre improvement on his 2.29m season’s best to hit the ‘A’ qualifying standard – insists he is ready for the challenge.

Olympic silver medallist Germaine Mason is competing in only his third event of the year while fellow Beijing finalists Tom Parsons and Martyn Bernard are also in contention, after failing to ignite their seasons to date.

“If I can keep hold of my status as the top high jumper in Britain, then I should be looking good for a place in the team,” said Oni.

“I have had a really good season so far and I’m performing better than I ever have done, which is really promising.

“The high jump is always one of the most open events at any competition because there are so many things that can go wrong…
