Comeback Season 2011

Ideally, no one wants to have a comeback season the year before the Olympic games. Moreover, no one wants to have a comeback season at all, as all athletes want to stay on top of their game 24/7.  I was not fortunate enough to experience either of these. The fact is that injury, or any kind of performance-hindering setback, can hit you at any time during your career, and any serious athlete knows that this can be a price to pay for pushing your body to the limits.

This is my second lap of the comeback trail. My first was back in 2005 after a four-year spell of knee problems, which nearly ended my career – not because the injury just wouldn’t respond to any treatment, but because I mentally couldn’t take another year of disappointments at the time. Now with what I have called on my second lap of the comeback trail, and a consequence of the same type of injury that hit me back in 2001, I’m forced to return back to my humble beginnings.

I’ve believed for a long time that all successful athletes should always stay humble; otherwise the sport WILL humble you somehow eventually. For me, humbleness has always been an important attribute to have, although I admit that staying humble after defeating your competitors with your royal flush of talent and hard work is difficult. 🙂
